Floor Designs, Inc.

Providing Excellence in Hardwood Since 1928

Our Roots Run Deep  (Over 100Years!)

Floor Designs, Inc. was formed in 1985 by Reginald and Barbara Horton, but the foundation of  Reginald's  craftsmanship was laid in the generations before him.   Going back to the turn of the century, the history begins with Charles Geary, who started Southern Oak Floor Company.  William Horton worked for the Geary's in the 1920's while he studied for his law degree at Washington University.  After Mr. Geary's death in 1928, John Horton, William's father, bought Southern Oak Floor Company, and William changed the name to St. Louis Flooring Company.  St. Louis Flooring Company grew to become one of the largest hardwood floor companies in the country.

In 1939, William Horton built a "state of the art" flooring mill in Cuba, Missouri.   He purchased timber rights on large tracks of land, built saw mills in southern Missouri and Arkansas, and later added distribution centers in St. Louis and Denver.  That time brings forth memories of them operating their own steam engine, and delivering most of the production by rail.

After working for St. Louis Flooring for twenty years, Reginald and Barbara Horton bought the company, making it a third generation business, and merged it with their company, Floor Designs, Inc.  Reginald's resume extends from 1958 to present, and consists of approximately 2500 gymnasiums, and thousands of homes.  In 1994, Floor Designs redirected it's focus strictly on hardwood floors (fazing out carpet and vinyl), and the area of opertation to Missouri and Illinois. Reginald's knowledge is being planted in a fourth generation,  in whom many new floors have already been laid.
